Birchwood
Maggie had another great year at Birchwood. She was in Hilltop with a lot of her friends from last year. She went on a weeklong backpacking trip into Superior National Forest that had it's challenging moments - their water filter broke and they were without water for 24 hours until they met someone who lent them a new filter. The counselor wrote me a letter to let me know how Maggie's attitude really saved the day, she kept morale up, kept people laughing and is an extraordinary kid, especially in the face of challenges. But I already knew that! Maggie also auditioned for and was cast as Smee in Peter Pan, directed by Sarah, her cousin. Apparently Maggie's Smee was hilarious and got a lot of laughs. Sarah said Maggie came into the audition with an accent, some character 'bits' and really went for it, Smee was the part she really wanted. yay Maggie, I wish I could have seen it. There are some great pictures on the Birchwood sight of Maggie in the play, I'll try to get them and post them here. Maggie is already looking forward to going back to camp next year.Oh, the pictures of maggie dressed up are for Final Banquet on the last night of camp. The picture of her with her hair slicked back and sunglasses on is Talent Night where they did a lipsync to Uptown Girl.
Santa Barbara
We went to Santa Barbara last weekend because Tony was taking Maggie to see her first concert there on Sunday night - The Killers! She loved it, by the way, LOVED. Just grinning ear to ear, Tony said she was on her feet the whole time, singing and dancing. Anyway, since the concert was Sunday night we decided to go down Saturday and spend the night, because every time we drive through Santa Barbara Sally begs us to rent the bikes that you can ride along the beach. You know the bikes I'm talking about - the family bikes! We had a blast, mostly torturing Maggie who was mortified about the whole thing. She kept saying, "God, I hope the Killers don't see me." Oh, the paper train conductor hat Tony is wearing in the picture was courtesy of Amtrak, which Sally and I rode back to LA.
Meet Billy and Penny
Yep. We got new kittens. And they are ADORABLE! And they have helped us deal with the absence of Fern so they are little furry angels. They're named after the two main characters in Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, which is Maggie's but now Sally loves it and has it memorized, word for word, dialog and songs(and there are about 10 songs).

Sally as Tony
Fern
I'm still not really ready to write about this, or deal with it for that matter, but I came across this picture tonight of Sally and Fern. Sweet little Fern. Anyway, when we were in Wisconsin in August, Fern disappeared. She was always an indoor/outdoor cat and the morning we left, she left with us. As Maggie and Sally and I were getting into a cab at about 6 am, Fern slipped out the door as she did most mornings. Only this time she didn't ever come back. We still hope she might find her way back, but the truth is she's probably gone for good. It has been really hard on us all, but especially on Sally. She loved Fern, was always playing with her, picking her up. And when she realized that Fern was running away every time she saw her, Sally stopped picking her up for a few months, which took great restraint. She won Fern back and was very proud of that. I felt especially bonded to Fern too, because she was our first cat and we did everything wrong. We introduced her to Holly way too fast and she was just terrified, so she'd pee everywhere, out of terror. And the smell of cat pee is so bad, I was ready to give up on her, give her back to the crazy cat lady we got her from, but I thought what an awful message that sends to an adopted kid and I persevered, and retrained Fern to use the litter box and to learn to like Holly. And it all worked and so Fern feels like my victory. I'm not really one to go on and on about a pet, but Fern was just such a sweet cat and we are all still in a kind of shock. Sally still wants to believe Fern is coming back although lately she's been asking me if I think Fern is dead. I tell her that I don't know, which is true. That Fern could come back, or not. But that Fern was such a happy cat, and she was well loved and we gave her a good life. Fern would not have been happy as an indoor cat, there was nothing like seeing her stalking bugs in the garden. Sigh. Fern, we miss you.
It still fits!
Okay, the zipper wasn't zipped all the way and I probably would have to have a rib removed to get it to close, but it almost still fits! Tony, Sally and I went to Wisconsin for the 4th of July and had a great time. Maggie was at camp. While we were there, we went up to the attic and dug out my wedding dress since Sally has been asking about our wedding a lot. Anyway, I put it on over my clothes. I still love it. And it was the first one I tried on.
Peachy
This year for father's day we gave Tony a peach tree. It's in a big pot on the porch outside our bedroom where it can remain for a few years until we have to replant it in the yard. Next spring it should even give us peaches! When we first got to California we rented a house with a peach tree in the yard and LOVED it. I made tons of peach upside down cakes. After we moved into our new house and before the rental was occupied, I drove over one morning with Maggie and made her get out and steal peaches. The handyman was apparently inside and reported us to the Landlord who hated us already and this was just icing on the cake. Or fuzz on the peach. Anyway, a peach tree for an amazing dad. Tony, our girls are so lucky to have a dad like you, you're kind and smart and gentle. Maggie isn't in the picture because she had already gone to camp.
